Undergrad college application app for the University of California

The University of California (UC) Application is the dedicated platform used to apply to all undergraduate campuses within the UC system. Unlike other US universities, UC campuses do not accept the Common Application or Coalition Application.

Students applying to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, and other UC campuses must apply through this single, system-specific portal.

Who Uses the UC Application

All nine undergraduate UC campuses use this platform exclusively. These include some of the most competitive public universities in the United States.

Students can apply to multiple UC campuses through one application, but each campus evaluates applicants independently.

How the Application Works

Students complete one UC application and select the campuses and programs they wish to apply to. The application is then submitted once and distributed to all selected campuses.

Unlike other systems, there is no separate submission per university. However, each campus reviews the application individually, which means the same materials must work across multiple contexts.

The application follows a fixed timeline, with a defined submission window rather than rolling deadlines.

Key Components of the Application

The UC Application includes personal and academic information, along with a detailed record of coursework and grades. Students are required to enter their academic history manually, including subjects and performance across high school.

The platform also includes a section for activities and achievements, where students present extracurricular involvement, awards, and other relevant experiences.

Standardised test scores such as the SAT or ACT are not considered by UC campuses as part of the admissions process.

Writing Requirements for the University of California

1. Personal Insight Questions (PIQs).

The PIQs are designed to understand how students think, what they have done, and how they engage with their environment. The emphasis is on clarity and substance rather than narrative style.
Some of the prompts students are asked to choose from include:

Unlike traditional essays, these responses are expected to be direct and specific. Each answer should focus on a distinct idea, rather than repeating themes across responses.

2. Supplemental Essays

UC campuses do not typically require additional essays beyond the Personal Insight Questions.

In some cases, applicants may be invited to submit additional information after applying, but this is not part of the standard process.

Recommendations & Documents

Letters of recommendation are not required as part of the standard UC application. Some campuses may request them later in the process, but most admissions decisions are made without them.

Academic records are self-reported within the application, and official transcripts are requested only after admission.

Deadlines & Submission Structure

The UC Application operates on a fixed submission window.

Applications are typically submitted between November 1 and November 30

There are no early decision or early action rounds

All applications are reviewed within the same timeline

Students submit one application, which is then sent to all selected campuses.

How Studea Supports This Process

Each application platform requires a slightly different approach, even when the underlying components appear similar.

Studea works with students to understand how to position their experiences within the expectations of each system, ensuring that the application remains consistent while still adapting where necessary. The focus is on clarity, structure, and thoughtful presentation across platforms.
